Most new construction jobs will not require furring,
but nearly all re-siding or remodeling jobs will need furring so that the
finished siding job will not appear wavy. If your sub-surface is wood,
use lath strips. If your sub-surface is masonry, install 1"x3"
wood strips with masonry nails. |
Surface Preparation
Preparation shoud be done carefully; proper
surface prepartion is one of the most improtant parts of your siding installation
job. All exterior wall surfaces must be even so that your new vinyl
siding will be straight and look sharp. Take some extra time to make sure
that the surface of the wall is ready to accept the new siding.
- Tie back all shrubbery and trees when
plantings are close to the house. This will give you more work room and
will help prevent damage to the landscaping.
- Remove all downspouts, moldings and
lighting fixtures that will interfere with installation.
- Window sill extensions may be removed
so that new window trim can be installed with the window casing.
- Remove any old caulking around windows
and doors.
- On older homes, replace any rotten
wood and securely nail all loose boards and wood trim.
Furring
For horizontal siding: Strips
should be installed vertically on 12" to 16" cneters. Make sure
they are installed completely around windows, doors and other openings,
at all corners, and at the top and bottom of the area to be sided.
For vertical siding: Strips shoudl be nailed horizontally to structural
lumber on 12" to 16" centers. make sure to install furring strips
completely around windows, doors and other openings, at all corners, and
at the top and bottom of the area to be sided.
Furred siding can be covered with insulated sheeting, or the spaces
between strips can be filled with insulated sheeting that is equal in thickness
to the furring strips.
Insulation: Rigid foam insualtion board, available in 4'x8' sheets
or fan-fold sections, can protect and level the exterior wall surfaces.
